As many of you will be aware, we have introduced a new Third senior team at Rockingham, for the 2018 season. This is a significant step change for our club and a real indication of how we are progressing. We are pleased to report that we have been accepted into Division 8 of the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League.

We have taken this step because we have a fantastic crop of young players coming through and we have invested heavily in their development. Many of them are ready for senior cricket and we desperately want to keep them at the club and manage their progress, up through the ranks. At a time when many clubs are struggling, it is great that we continue to thrive and are able to provide competitive cricket for all.

Our first team now play in the South Yorkshire Championship and nothing will give us greater pleasure than to see our homegrown juniors, play at this level.

It has been a very difficult job to align our 3rd XI fixtures (as we have only one field and our first and second teams use it on alternate Saturdays!); but we have managed to find dates for all fixtures. Please see the attachment that highlights all of the 3rd team fixtures.  You will notice that a few of the home games are to be played on a Sunday; there is also a Bank Holiday Monday match and there are also a couple of ‘blank’ weekends.

It will be my pleasure to captain the team and I will be assisted by my vice captain and good mate, Martyn Hewitt. Between us, we have over 30 years of experience at Rockingham and well over 1000 wickets!  We may not be as quick as we were, but we believe that we are perfectly placed to coach, mentor and captain our lads; to become very good league cricketers for Rockingham CCC. Indeed, without wishing to be too bold; our juniors will receive a better grounding with our Third XI than they would at any other club.

We have secured some other high quality senior support, that I will announce in the next few weeks.  It is my intention, that for this team to work, we will need a minimum of 4 experienced senior players for each game and then 6 or 7, willing and enthusiastic juniors.

I am very confident that we will have a good summer and that we will allow these lads to grow and develop.  Those of you that know me, will know that we will be competitive,  but more importantly, we will have a lot of fun along the way. We will play intense cricket, in the right spirit and we will play with a smile, with a strong emphasis on learning and improving (within a competitive environment and winning every game!)  🙂 We will need some support along the way from parents, family members and supporters (teas, raffles, scorers, pitch preparation) and I will be very grateful for any help that you can give. We are also looking for a sponsor and some match ball donations (just £30!).  So if you know of anyone that could help, then please let me know!

In terms of preparation for the season, we will practise with the other senior teams on Wednesday nights (8pm-9pm) at Netherwood school, from February 7th.  I would like to see our stronger junior players there and offer an open invite to all juniors; Year 8 and above.

If you have any questions, please give me a shout….

Thank you very much for your time and your support.

Up The Rock!!
